That sounds really strange, a divorce lawyer goes to fashion school. It happened. This is my story. One day after a particularly aggravating day in
the Family Law world, I'm scrolling through my inbox trying to find a diversion.
I was determined not to open any client-related emails lest I turn into a homicidal crazy person since I was having a rotten, no-good, kind of day.

There was an email from my law partner with a link to Above the Law, and in it, an article about Fashion Law. A diversion! Success! From there, I discovered Fordham Law School has a Fashion Law program. Fordham Law School. In Manhattan. Oh la la. Impulsively, I decided, I'm going to apply. I like being an advocate. I like being fierce. I like a challenge. I like new things & I embrace change. That is how a Divorce Lawyer ends up going to Fashion School. I'm going to Fordham's Fashion Law Institute. I'm betting I'll be the only family lawyer with 20+ years of experience there. ** It'll be me and the Millennials. They'll make me young again.
I enthusiastically ordered the textbook. I ordered it old school - hard copy book. When it arrived, all 3 inches thick, 3 pounds heavy, I realized why a download to my iPad would have been smarter. But, the topics energize me: Trademarks. Licensing Arrangements. E-commerce. Retail Lease Agreements.
Raleigh, NC, where I live, has a burgeoning fashion, textile, & apparel industry - and no dedicated fashion lawyers (that I am aware of). These creative types need lawyers; yet to get the expertise they need, they must find a corporate lawyer in a more traditional corporate law firm. I think I can provide better services. More directed. Targeted. Better suited for flexibility. Approachable. I have been navigating family law disputes for 22 years -- I am not intimidated by drama; hostility; hard bargains; stubbornness; desire; litigation -- that's all in a day's work.
I'm not giving up or slowing down my family law practice. I love it. I (mostly) love my clients. I am invigorated and intellectually stimulated by the new fashion law interest which is already
helping my family law practice. I have an awesome staff who, after initial eye rolling ("you can't be serious"), are now bubbling with ideas for both the established family law practice and the
new fashion law practice. I hope you'll follow me on my journey.
** PostScript: I was not the only 20+ year lawyer there but the only 20+ family lawyer.
